November reCreate featured artist Emily Manalo Ruiz

Our reCreate featured artist of November, Emily Manalo Ruiz, is a California native living and working in Philadelphia.  She is an artist that uses stained and tattered fabric scraps.  Her work evokes a sense of catharsis through reinterpretation of the past.

Using salvaged textiles, Ruiz stitches past experiences into reverent stories with a sense of nostalgia, longing and, sometimes, hope. Emily recently came into The Resource Exchange to find fitting fabric scraps for a work that was commissioned by Urban Outfitters.  The completed work is her largest to date at 13 x 6 feet and is hanging in the new Malibu Urban Outfitters now. It is inspired by the colors and landscape of Malibu.

Ruiz received her Certificate (Fashion Studies) in 2011 from Moore College of Art & Design and her BFA (Painting and Art History) in 2002 from The University of South Carolina.
