The TerraCycle crew came to The Resource Exchange early this summer to find salvaged, unique and quirky items that could add to their offices. They left with the two giant umbrellas that we saved from The Philadelphia Flower Show, a bunch of old speakers, salvaged lauan with windows cut into it, an old women’s room door, and more!
Recently The Resource Exchange team took a staff trip to visit our friends at TerraCycle in return. We went to their location in Trenton, NJ to see the building that they’ve decorated using trash and other materials that would have ended up in landfill. They use all different kinds of waste in creative ways. We were able to see some of the items they got from us in action too! The umbrellas have a new home in the courtyard area of TerraCycle’s building. Because of The Resource Exchange, these umbrellas enabled art, photography, and environmental projects alike, before settling in their new home at TerraCycle.
The Resource Exchange’s connection with TerraCycle is an exciting one because of what they do. Our visiting summer Fellow from Johannes Arthur from Ghana (and reCreate Featured Artist of October) was able to come with us on our visit to see examples of how what is considered ‘waste’ can be creatively reused and recycled. Here’s a little more about them from their website:
More than just a recycling company, TerraCycle strives to be a driving force behind increasing environmental awareness and action. Our goal is to be a trusted resource for families, schools, communities, and even corporations to find tips, stats, facts, tactics, and news to help them live a greener, cleaner lifestyle. Together, we are Eliminating the Idea of Waste®.
Today, TerraCycle is a highly-awarded, international upcycling and recycling company that collects difficult-to-recycle packaging and products and repurposes the material into affordable, innovative products. TerraCycle is widely considered the world’s leader in the collection and reuse of non-recyclable, post-consumer waste.
