This past summer, we save a bunch of lumber from the set of a soon-to-be-released major motion picture shot in the Philadelphia area. One of the great ways that it has been reused was to build raised beds for Pastorius Community Gardens! Pastorius Gardens is a newly formed neighborhood association whose vision is to create an organic community garden and permaculture orchard in order to “increase access to locally grown affordable nutrition, provide educational opportunities in organic vegetable and fruit production, and create a green space where our neighborhood may come together to share their stories, recipes, and seeds.” If you think this is as an awesome project as we do and want to help further their mission, click HERE to donate to their current GoFundMe Campaign!
A few weeks ago, over 50 volunteers showed up for Martin Luther King Day of Service to transform the lot at Germantown Ave and E. Pastorius St. into a community garden ready for spring planting.
This actually isn’t the first time that lumber save from a set was used at the community garden! In the summer of 2014, lumber from a different movie set was used to make the very first raised bed (See our previous blog post about it HERE). Things have come a long way since then and are continuing to head in a good direction! One of the garden coordinators, Vita, who emailed us about the project, wrote “I really love that our garden began at the Resource Exchange! The work of reuse is so very special, in so many ways! From the awesomeness of having a movie set be your badass garden bed, to the feel good quality of using things instead of automatically putting them into a landfill.” We couldn’t agree more and look forward to a continuing relationship with Pastorius Community Gardens!
