Sustainable Set: ‘The Opening, Or Closing Of A Door’ by Kristine Leschper

Kristine Leschper has been a pal and supporter of The Resource Exchange for many years, incorporating reuse and sustainable practices into all her works as an artist. We’re celebrating her soon to be released album, “The Opening, Or Closing Of A Door”, out March 4th on Anti- Records, by sharing this behind the scenes look at the sustainable set she built for an ongoing project. The set was also featured in the music video for “Ribbon”!

“I am a devoted resource exchanger, and I wanted to let you know about a project I have been working on.

Over the past few months I set out to build a minimal theatrical set design out of entirely recycled and repurposed materials – a few small items and hardware pieces had to be purchased new, but we ended up with at least 95% repurposed materials!

This is an ongoing project that I will continue to develop and expand upon for live shows in 2022. Thank you for all that you do!”

Materials Sourced from The Resource Exchange:
  • 9 yards of fabric
  • several containers of textile ink
  • metal pulleys
Secondhand items from other sources:
  • additional fabric (recycled bedsheets)
  • plywood
  • wardrobe

This isn’t Kristine’s first sustainable set. For a previous project in 2018, Kristine made a replica of herself for a music video using plaster, canvas strips, cotton batting, and acrylic paint we diverted from the waste stream.

Her album,“The Opening, Or Closing Of A Door”, comes out on March 4th and the release show will be at Johnny Brenda’s with Kassie Krut, April 9th.

Congratulations, Kristine! Thank you for sharing this incredible project with us!
