Cassidy Fogg Leighton is a Philadelphia-based artist, originally from Maine. Textiles, text, and art have helped people form connections and keep memories for centuries. Bound up in these things are stories, labor, love, ideas, and emotion.
Her work brings fabric and ephemera together to form pieces that emphasize history, connection, & thoughtfulness. In that spirit, her work uses reclaimed materials. Manufacturing of goods often relies on exploitative labor practices. In an effort to minimize her support for this system, as well as her work’s impact on the earth, fabric, paint, ephemera, and fibers in her work have been reclaimed, bringing with them history, memories, and stories.
“I create collage and mixed media pieces with an emphasis on using and transforming everyday ephemera. My art uses reclaimed materials to emphasize connections to history, unrecognized labor, and nature. This practice also reduces my impact on the environment. I frequently reuse vintage linen remnants, seed catalogs, art papers, and book pages to highlight the beauty held in everyday objects.”
