Jason McQuirns

“I’m Jay McQuirns – a cartoonist, illustrator, animator and music producer. For nine years I helped to run the Rendering/Animation department at a graphics studio in Philadelphia. My freelance animations have been used by French hip-hop producer Wax Tailor, Philly soul group The Thompsons and others. My illustration work is sold throughout Philadelphia and enjoyed worldwide. I enjoy hand crafting zines, comic books, mixtapes and many other diy endeavors. I also enjoy my cats Lucy and Sketch.

As far as incorporating sustainable materials go, when printing zines at home I tend to use paper that others are getting rid of. I often times find objects like boxes, frames, old canvases (and recently advertisement magnets from The Resource Exchange) to paint over with my own illustration and designs. For collages, I’m embarrassed to show my ever growing collection and paper patterns and magazines once destined for a landfill that now fill drawers throughout my house. Lastly, I make mixtapes from my vinyl collection (which has grown from people about to throw away their collections) and record to use old cassette tapes that people try throwing away (although those are getting harder and harder to find as cassettes are coming back in style).”
