Influenced by pop art, abstract expressionism, and minimalism, Jesus Vicente Murillo’s work serves as a visual diary of his life as a professional musician, composer, writer and educator. Drawing from the ingenuity and tenacity of his upbringing in Detroit, he aims to explore new phases of beauty in all stages of a material’s life, seeking to glorify the broken, superfluous and mundane. From using discarded surfaces for more traditional works, to using discarded clothes to paint, his work aims to dismantle society’s perception of what is truly disposable by realizing an object’s unrecognized expressionistic potential, when its practical or functional value has seemingly run its course.
