Steppingstone Scholars + The Resource Exchange

Welcome Summer Interns from Steppingstone Scholars!  Doreen, Malikah, and Sienna will be working with us for the month of July, and we’re so happy to have the helping hands.

Interns with Frame best

Steppingstone, a college access nonprofit that prepares educationally underserved students for college and career success, is partnering with The Resource Exchange to give students interested in art, design, and urban environments the opportunity to learn more about the intersection of sustainability, the arts, and the local economy. This partnership will provide the students with a unique opportunity to learn first hand about the specific challenges of sustaining and growing an entrepreneurial nonprofit venture, while actively improving their environment and contributing to the arts in Philadelphia.

Because making art from the arts is such a big part of what we try to encourage here, we asked each intern to pick one object from the store that they will include in an original piece of artwork by the end of July.  Here’s what they chose and what they have to say about starting here at The Resource Exchange…

Doreen, why did you choose to intern at The Resource Exchange?

“I wanted to work in an environment that encourages creativity.  I also love that The Resource Exchange saves tons of materials that would ordinarily be thrown into landfills.  The mission of The Resource Exchange is wonderful.”

What are you most excited to learn about while you’re here?

“I’m excited about learning how the creative applications of incoming materials are balanced with the business aspect of The resource Exchange.”

Malikah, why did you choose to intern at The Resource Exchange?

“I chose to intern at The Resource Exchange because I enjoy being around art inspiring things.  Also because when I first heard of this place I immediately wanted to get involved.  another reason I chose to intern here is because I’ve never done it before and wanted to experience it.”

What are you most excited to learn about while you’re here?

“I’m most excited to learn about how to use the recycled things in the store and make something really cool with them.  At this point I have no idea what to do with this stuff!”

Sienna, why did you choose to intern at The Resource Exchange?

“I chose to intern here because I thought it would be a great opportunity to cut down on the amount of stuff that gets thrown away.  I figured it would also be a great artistic experience; working with so much different stuff!  I also wanted to see a different part of the city.”

What are you most excited to learn about while you’re here?

“Fabrics.  I really want to learn how to sew at some point and fabric/ pattern knowledge would be helpful in figuring out how sewing works.”

Thanks, ladies, we can’t wait to see what you make from these exciting finds.  Stay tuned for future updates on what Doreen, Malika, and Sienna are doing in the store!
