The Resource Exchange goes to Redbud Nursery

Now that it’s September you might be starting to plant for the cool weather. If you haven’t decided what you’re going to plant yet let me make a quick suggestion: Check out Redbud Nursery!!

redbud nurseryRedbud is a fantastic native plants nursery just outside of Philadelphia. We went to Redbud to get some plants for the ink and dye making workshops that we just had. They had just about everything, and we picked up some alum root and blood root, both great plants for natural dyeing processes.

Many of the plants that they have are natives that are being crowded out and hard to find in the wild. Blood root for example makes a beautiful red dye, but it is rare and many states consider it a protected wild species because it can be easily overexploited. Rather than wild gather this beautiful native plant, you can buy some from Redbud plant in your garden, harvest some, and help to make sure that the species lives on.

We also bought a cranberry viburnum bush (viburnum trilobum), which is quite beautiful in fall. The leaves turn a vibrant red as do the berries! So if you’re looking for more fall planting ideas, here’s another one: Buy a cranberry viburnum from Redbud!
