Temple student Doreen McNeill’s Public Art Project

Now that Temple’s fall classes have started, we wanted to feature the work of one of their new students…our former intern, the talented Doreen McNeill!  Before classes started, while she was busy volunteering here at the shop, she was also continuing the creative reuse public art project she started here as her Masterman Senior Service Project. You may remember us featuring the start of this project on our blog back in June.

All summer, Doreen was reMaking journals and other keepsakes out of reclaimed materials like old magazines, papers, and cards. The artistically and environmentally crafted journals were left outside in public spaces for people to pick up and reuse. And, the collage based items were put together using wheat paste instead of glue!

Doreen also created a tumblr where she posts pictures of the process and where she left her public pieces. Check her page out now, where she is continuing to post about environmental issues, artistic endeavors, and how they connect. Here’s a picture from her latest post about “Mortimer” the landfill sign created to remind people that there is no “away!”

Way to go, Doreen, we can’t wait to see what you come up with next!!
