Today the re salutes Mt. Airy Art Garage, an exceptional nonprofit Arts Hub that “functions as a resource center of creativity for artists, art lovers, and all those who seek to bring an eco-friendly and artistic sensibility to their lives.” MAAG houses artist studios and gallery space for its members – mainly artists in Northwest Philadelphia – in a gorgeously renovated former warehouse space in downtown Mt. Airy. They host artist-driven workshops, events and art markets and serve more generally as an incubator and communal space “for artistic creativity, collaboration, and celebration.” We dig it!

In honor of Women’s History Month, we’d particularly like to highlight “The Gender Weave Project” now on display there. The Gender Weave Project features work of Moore College of Art & Design students that investigates their relationship with gender and identity. Moore is the first and only women’s visual arts college in the U. S. so it is fitting that MAAG is collaborating with the College on this exhibition. The exhibition, which also features the work of invited guest professional artists, “examines social norms in its efforts to overcome prejudice and misconceptions and increase public awareness.”

The exhibition is tactile and vibrant, diverse in both the themes explored and the mediums represented, including painting, sculpture, photography and textile. The pieces are particularly enhanced by the personal and thoughtful artist statements. The exhibition will run through March 29 and admission is free, so if you can make it up to MAAG this week, we recommend that you do so!

Mt. Airy Art Garage is located at 11 West Mt. Airy Ave and is open Wednesday and Friday 12-7, Thursday and Saturday 12-6, and Sunday 12-5.
